PROGRAMS

Our monthly member meetings  are held at 7:00 p.m. every third Tuesday at the Discovery Center, located at 4750 Troost Ave in Kansas City, MO. Q & A starts at 6:10 p.m. Meeting notes can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate month. For a map and directions to this location, click here.

In order that we might vacate the Discovery Center facility by 9 pm following our monthly meeting we will, beginning this month, arrange with our presenters to have a question and answer session at 6:10 pm prior to our regularly scheduled meeting at 7 pm.  The presenters will then share their topics with us, as always,.  Please bring your snacks and food dishes to share with your Society friends at 5:30 pm or as soon as you arrive.

Are You Mystified by Filtration?  Deb Spencer

What’s the difference between a skimmer and a biofilter?  And what role do UV clarifiers play in keeping your pond clean?  If you struggle with these questions, have we got the meeting for you!

Back by popular demand Deb Spencer, co-owner of Water’s Edge in Lawrence, will bring her considerable expertise in the care and growing of all things pond-possible to the March meeting and review different kinds of filtration. Proper filtration is key to a healthy pond, and a healthy pond is key to healthy fish and plants, not to mention your labor and enjoyment of owning a pond!

Deb will describe how very effective filters can be retrofitted into existing ponds and how you can add more filtration.  Also, if you are considering a new pond she will describe how to build a system that is expandable to include that inevitable second pond or water feature.  As always, Deb is a ‘don’t miss’ speaker!  Spring is just around

So Many ROCKS, So Many CHOICES!  Learn the DO'S and DON'TS! Tony Trusty

Have you ever wandered around piles of rocks and wondered what type of rock is best for YOUR pond?  If you have, or if all the choices were so intimidating you just did nothing, don't miss the March 20th    meeting where Tony Trusty with House of Rocks and Joe Alonge, a professional stone mason, will answer all your questions about what rocks work best for water gardens and water features.

Tony brings his vast knowledge of decorative boulders and gravel, wallstones and cobblestones, holey boulders and fountain rocks...and so much more...to help us understand the properties of the different kinds of rocks and how to best use them in our gardens.

Joe brings 30 years of invaluable experience as a stone mason to answer our questions about rock and how to "lay it up"...its placement in mason-eze lingo.  Learn how to put rock together so's not to create a leaky pond and how to make sure it doesn't shift.

And finally, just what are the logistics in getting those rocks to your home and in place?  Come to the House of Rocks talk and find out!
