The theme for this presentation is wildlife that could be attracted to water features in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Lakeside Nature Center is part of Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation. Their mission is three-fold: to educate about native Missouri wildlife, to rehabilitate injured native Missouri wildlife and to conserve a habitat for native Missouri wildlife. The motto of the center is “Let The Wild be Free”. Each year, Lakeside naturalists teach thousands of students of all ages about the wildlife treasures of the local Kansas City vicinity and surrounding region. Wildlife housed at Lakeside Nature Center often arrives initially with some injury. Brought in by citizens that have encountered animals in need of Care, foubd in Missouri, these wild animals are treated by staff and volunteer naturalists. The majority return to the wild in due time. Some individual animals remain at Lakeside Nature Center for educational displays and to be handled by naturalists for teaching purposes. You can visit Lakeside nature Center, 4701 E. Gregory Blvd., in Swope Park. See the resident American Bald Eagle, native hawks, owls, kestrels and vulture. Native reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish and invertebrates also can be seen in displays of natural eco systems. Admission is free and Lakeside Nature Center is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 9AM to 5PM, and Sunday afternoons 12 noon to 4 PM. The surrounding self-guided nature trails are available for exploration from dawn to dusk. You won’t want to miss hearing Susan tell WGS members about the native wildlife creatures that may visit their water gardens.
